Recently, in the halls of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) in Berkeley, Calif., a revelation was taking shape. During a workshop tailored to unite neuroscientists, mathematicians, and computer scientists in the study of the visual cortex, one mathematician could contain his astonishment no longer.
