According to the company, the instrument reduces isocratic solvent consumption up to 80 percent, reportedly lowering waste disposal costs, preparation time, and environmental impact. The enhanced instrument features five operating modes: peak detection, timed events, switch to waste, remote, and run termination. It also features LED lights to indicate that the mobile phase is either being recycled or sent to waste. A membrane key pad enables users to switch between operating modes and re-zero the baseline. The user may also determine the output, set point, and delay time from the keypad.

System For Mycobacteria Growth And DetectionThe BACTEC 9000MB System was developed for the growth and detection of mycobacteria and recently received 510(k) clearance from the Food and Drug Administration. It uses Myco/F Sputa medium, a nonradiometric medium with a highly sensitive fluorometric oxygen sensor that detects decreases of oxygen as it is consumed by the mycobacteria. The fully automated, continuous monitoring system enables users to add PANTA/F and Supplement/F to the Myco/F Sputa vial and then inoculate the vial with a processed laboratory specimen. After the vial is placed in the instrument, the vial is incubated and monitored until the instrument flags the culture as either a positive or an out-of-protocol negative vial.
Turner Designs Unveils Protease Detection SystemThe TD-700 Laboratory Fluorometer, combined with the EnzChek Protease Assay Kit offered by Molecular Probes Inc. of Eugene, Ore., provides a direct method for detection of metallo-, serine, acid, and sulfhydryl proteases. The combined system eliminates separation procedures from traditional protease detection methods and is claimed to be up to 100 times more sensitive than the FTC-casein assay. The system can be used to detect protease contamination of culture media, measure the kinetics of a variety of exo- and endopeptidases over a wide pH range, or measure total substrate turnover at a fixed time following addition of the enzyme.
Spectronics Offers Video Documentation SystemThe Spectroline EVD-1000 electronic video documentation system for biotechnology applications, pictured here, is designed as an alternative to conventional 35 mm and instant photography. The system can record trace amounts of nucleic acid and protein samples viewed under ultraviolet or white light. It uses a high-definition 1/2" frame transfer black-and-white charge-coupled device (CCD) camera with a horizontal resolution of 570 lines. Components include the EIS-1000 electronic imaging system and the EAS-1000 electronic archival system. The EIS is capable of viewing fluorescent bands of ethidium bromide-stained nucleic acids from DNA or RNA gels under medium-wave UV light (312 nm) and visible bands of silver- and Coomassie Blue-stained protein samples under white light. The EAS-1000 contains a 68070 microprocessor chip that digitizes the video image in a 768 x 472 x 8 format. Four images can be stored on each 3.5" disk. The EAS-1000 also provides editing features that enable users to add text as well as create and change file names on the recorded images.
Colorimetric Western Blot Kits Now AvailableThe new Western blot kit is intended for immunodetection of protein immobilized on membranes. The kit includes a choice of either peroxidase- or phosphatase-labeled affinity purified antibody specific for mouse, rabbit, or human immunoglobulins. Reagents required for all steps of the assay are supplied as ready-to-use stable liquids. TMB and BCIP/NBT substrates are provided as one-component working solutions for use directly from the bottle. Denley Instruments Launches Microplate WasherThe Aquarius microplate washer incorporates an integral orbital shaker with speed shaking automatically optimized according to dispense volume. The user can program all washing parameters -- dispense volume, buffer type, plate or strip modes, soak and shake type, dispense height, and aspiration height -- on a four-key menu. A total of 99 wash programs can be named and stored. Each program may have up to four linked protocols. Single and twin manifold in 8- and 12- well formats are available. New software for the instrument enables the Aquarius to be completely controlled from a PC and the wash procedure logged after each plate, if required.
Infometrix Releases Upgrade To Chemometrics SoftwareVersion 2.0 of the Pirouette chemometrics software has been optimized for Windows NT and Windows 95. It supports drag-and-drop graphics, various data set sizes, and concurrent sessions. Management of data and results has been integrated into a tree-like structure to form an intuitive object-management system. An unlimited number of multivariate models reportedly can also be stored and managed as part of the Pirouette data file. Batch analysis of an assortment of data subsets with several algorithms can be set up for unattended processing. Full cross-validation has been included in the exploratory PCA algorithm.
