Topping this year’s survey of academic researchers is the J. David Gladstone Institutes, a San Francisco-based nonprofit biomedical research organization with a focus on cardiovascular disease, virology and immunology, and neurodegenerative disorders that also won the top honors last year. Two other basic biomedical research powerhouses, the Stowers Institute for Medical Research and the Research Center for Molecular Medicine (CeMM), in Vienna, Austria, take the 3rd and 4th spot, respectively. The Jackson Laboratories—the birthplace of JAX mice, the most published of mouse models—comes in at #11. And the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (#15) and Roswell Park Cancer Institute (#20) are among the oldest and most time-honored centers for the marine sciences and cancer research.
