FINALIST: By stitching together 40 high-resolution shots of the hippocampal region of a mouse model of Down syndrome, neurobiologist Ahmad Salehi created this single hyper-informative image which presents a global view of the hippocampus with enough resolution to examine the connections of individual dendrites.Ahmad Salehi
Truncate-snouted burrowing frogs (Glyphoglossus molossus) normally live underground (fossorial) but after the first heavy rain at the end of the dry season they appear in large numbers in their nuptial ponds where they puff up, call and mate. Here the frogs are in remnant pools in a dry river bed, Phnom Prich Wildlife Sanctuary, Mondulkiri, Cambodia. WINNER: This image of a water bear (phylum Tardigrada), was taken by scientist-photographer duo, Eye of Science, who obtained some water bears from the University of Stuttgart and carefully prepared the specimens by killing the animals, washing them with alcohol, rinsing them in a high-pressure chamber with liquid carbon dioxide, drying them, and coating them with gold or platinum. They then picked up a single water bear with a loose hair, placed it on the specimen holder, and surrounded it with bits of moss for the scanning electron microscope photo shoot. WINNER: The giant unilamellar liposome featured in this winning image is 40 µm in diameter and is composed of ceramide, cholesterol, and the glycerophospholipid POPC. The star-shaped region is formed by the crystallization of ceramide-rich lipids.Luis Bagatolli
