The statement by the editors of Scientific American "Whereas a century ago a patent  clerk divined the theory of relativity in his spare time, discovering a Higgs boson requires decades of planning and the efforts of 6000 researchers" is deeply wrong.

The theory of relativity was the result of the efforts of several authors, including Henri Poincaré who was the first to postulate the relativty principle and to formulate special relativity. In the XXI Century, just as a century ago, theory can be made by individuals and important new ideas are in general initially suggested by a few people. The situation is not fundamentally different for new ideas in instrumentation.

The obvious evidence that in some domains experimental projects have become more industrial does not mean that the same happens to the original scientific creation. The problem, nowadays, is that those who hold money and influence want to be recognized as being the best scientists. But the reality is different.
