Australia Officially Debunks Homeopathy

Government researchers conclude that homeopathic therapies do not work.

By | April 14, 2014

WIKIMEDIA, JAVIER MEDIAVILLA EZQUIBELA “There is no reliable evidence that homoeopathy is effective for treating health conditions.” That is the stark conclusion of the Australian government’s extensive review of the available scientific literature pertaining to homeopathic therapies, which use highly diluted formulas to treat numerous ills.

Australia’s National Health and Medical Research Council assessed studies on the effectiveness of homeopathy in treating 68 different conditions, including asthma, arthritis, cold and flu, chronic fatigue syndrome, eczema, cholera, malaria, and heroin addiction, and concluded that either the homeopathic treatment was no more effective than placebo or that there was insufficient evidence to suggest the homeopathic cure was more effective than that. “Homeopathic remedies contain nothing whatsoever,” University College London pharmacologist David Colquhoun told The Independent. “The Americans have spent $2 [billion] investigating these things . . . they haven’t found a single one that works.”

“Obviously we understand the placebo effect,” John Dwyer, an immunologist at the University of New South Wales, told The Guardian. “We know that many people have illnesses that are short lived by its very nature, and their bodies will cure them, so it’s very easy for people to fall in the trap that because they did ‘A’, ‘B’ follows.”

Homeopathy has long been considered a pseudoscience, and several studies have failed to detect any effect of homeopathic treatments. But the Australian report serves as both the most extensive and coordinated effort yet to debunk claims made by homeopathic practitioners and as a directive to Australian doctors to warn their patients that such alternative therapies may interfere with more effective conventional medicines.

Australia not yet debunk homoeopathy...

Evidence on the effectiveness of homeopathy for treating health conditions Closes only on Monday, 26 May 2014, 05:00pm ....

he assessment arrived at by the NHMRC is evaluated by medical Doctors and PhD’s based in Allopathic disciplines. No Homeopathic researchers or scholars are involved and so obviously the conclusions will be biased as the Homeopathic process will not be understood....

As in the past....multinational allopathic pharamacuticals are behind thi moement...

More than enough evidences from Australia itself

Details of research in homœopathy including extensive references to recent clinical trials, double-blinded placebo controlled studies of individualised homœopathic treatments, research into the properties of water, meta-analyses of research and more are provided

Reliable information based on a site that you own or run (whois search)... hardly independent, yet you make claims against a national body that it is influenced by pharamceutical companies - where is your proof of this?

I'm a little curious on just what exactly did they study.  After reviewing the list of studies considered, it appears that anything that showed a positive result for homeopathic remidies was disgarded while studies that showed no result or negative results were included.  Mostly I'm a little concerned that the studies chosen don't specifically identify what brands they are using, nor do they do a side by side comparison with accepted pharmaceutical alternatives.  The data gathering technique is suspect  as every listed independent research study receiving consideration that showed a positive result was deemed to be not credible.  It brings to mind the Church Vs. Science issues of the middle ages only with the roles reversed...traditional western medicine seems to have deemed that anything lying outside of the scientifically accepted norms is nothing more than witchcraft or pseudo science.  It appears that they have forgotten their roots and no longer remember that virtually every major scientific advancement of the past thousand years has met the same discrimination and resistance.

We should also point out that the listed studies in many cases do list significant positive results in favor of homeopathic treatments however the results were excluded for various rather laughable reasons: They didn't approve of the publication, They didn't like that it contained commentary, they didn't like that it was included in a government study, they didn't like that it was part of an economic study for more cost effective treatments, they didn't like that it was tested in vitro, they didn't like that it wasn't tested in humans, the study was too specific, the study was too broad of scope etc.  In some cases, studies were excluded because they were being pier reviewed for the 3rd time to verify and reproduce results again but the level 3 review wasn't yet completed.

"the Australian report serves as both the most extensive and coordinated effort yet to debunk claims made by homeopathic practitioners"...... This makes it sound like the exercise was not a disinterested and objective assessment of the data and the issues raised by JamieG tend to add weight to this perception.

I dont know what kind of homeopathy treatment has been given on these 68 different cases. Most of the all these can be treated successfuly through homeopathy, if one followes samuel Hannehman classical approach, that is understanding the personality of patient, analysing patient basic nature, suffering of patient and modalities and root cause of symtoms both in physical and mental plane and deriving the similimum remedy which matches most of the symtems should defintely cure all of these 68 cases.

The modern homeopathy practice of reporterization is more complex and most of the failure are due to physician's in-capable or not having proper knowledge on homeopathy system should leads to such failure, it is not failure of homeopathy sytem. It is a failure of physician who has treated these cases through homeopathy.

The failure is due to physician's not having proper knowledge of homeopathy and not having proper understanding of sameul hannehman's principles, miastmatic studies, personality drug pictures.

Properly taken case study through homepathy classical approach one can cure 100% any of the major cases, worst case the patients suffering would be reduced greatly particularly in case of incurable irrecoverable cancer cases.

Is this conclusion is declared by world class homeopathy doctors or just only the panel of allopathy who oppose this system from last 200+ years.

The NHMRC has been attacking homeopathy for some time. Not long ago they leaked a draft statement that “It is unethical to treat patients with homeopathy”. For them to make such a statement in spite of all the published research and clinical evidence of two hundred years, including the current use of homeopathy worldwide, it is clear this organization has an agenda to discredit homeopathy.   This model did not succeed in the UK as the Royal Family did not agree to ban homeopathy as they all depended on that system. Homeopathy survived in Britain but is getting bad press these days with paid doctors bashing the system regularly with full page so called scientific arguments to demolish that wonderful system!

1. Just because an article covering a story says scientists have been trying to debunk homeopathy doesn't mean the study wasn't unbiased.

2. Comments don't effect the outcome of the study. "The purpose of public consultation is to ensure that that the relevant evidence has been identified and appropriately considered in the development of the draft Paper. NHMRC is also seeking feedback about whether the draft Paper is presented in a manner that can be understood by the Australian community."

Come on!! We have more that 30 years using the homeopaty IN ANIMALS, (in cattle, pets, birds, fish and wild animals, here in Mexico), succesfully, probed by scientific evidence. So, as long as we know, the animals dont´n know nothing at all about the placebo or suggestion effect. DVM Rodrigo Rios

This is welcome. Homeopathy as a curative system fails on a number of counts, not just efficacy as considered by the Australian authorities. The mechanism by which homeopathic remedies are supposed to work, given the immense dilution of any possible active ingredients, always posed a major hurdle to the defenders of homeopathy.  The supposed "molecular memory" explanation was a nonsense as there was no evidence for it and no possible chemical mechanism for its existence.

The whole basis of treating ailments with very dilute substances having like properties presents believers with great difficulties  whether homeopathy be judged from philosophical, efficacy or a mechanistic standpoint.

Effective cures are not only curative, they exhibit physiological changes in the body as they take effect. Neither of these criteria - cure or physiological changes - have been demonstrated in any homeopathy "remedies". For an active ingredient to work there has to be some evidence that it is working, otherwise any effect is likely to be due to the powerful placebo effect. If homeopathic remedies raised antibody titres or similar then this would be evidence that there was more at work than just the placebo effect. Unfortunately for the believers, there is no such evidence of significant physiological changes.

Beliefs of this sort are harmful. They divert resources and cast doubt about scientific medicine (and science itself), as well as condemning believers to ineffective treatments instead of encouraging them to seek effective treatments.

Good on yer Aussies.

If you say molecular memory is nonsense, and it does not have any chemical formula. then it has something else that is not able to prove by current existing setup/laboratory/equipment to analyze, measure it.

The scientific community has fixed idea about what is science. If any principle scientifically accepted/proved if and only if has proved in the laborotary of examining the contents of it. Otherwise it is not science or pseudo science, it means it is completely false or supersitution. This is complete failure of science to prove some phenomenon/rule/principle which is occuring in the nature. Don't call this is unscientific, it is just "super science", that we dont have enough equipment to preceive or capture the actually truth behind this prinicple of action with current scientific concepts or laboarotory setup. This requires completely different kinds of setup or setup to understand nature of different kinds of energy like life force energy, etc.

If you think homeopathic diluation can be accepted scientfically if only if it has some chemical evidence. Then first answer my question. The life force energy or vital force (VF) because of which we are alive today and absense of this VF, our body is dead. If you remove the vital force energy from living human body, then the body becomes dead. Can you give chemical formula for this vital force? If so it can be synthesised in the laboroatory and can be injected to dead person to make him alive. Is it make sense as per your scientific idea?

Since we dont have explaination scientifically what is the chemical contents of life force energy, can you call life force energy is false, nonsense, psuedo science, or superstition ????

There are so many such thing in the nature or universe we do not have explanation because we dont have the knowledge, laboratory setup or equipment to analyze and understand this phenonmen. We can only observe its existence/actions and its output.

First you should understand, the science is not complete, what ever we should able to understand or prove the principle of nature, that we are calling as science. what ever phenonemo or activity which is not able prove by material content or evidence is "bigger science" which is still need to explored, but we dont have any fundamental setup for this. From current scientific knowledge you cannot has answer to everything in the nature, like life force energy. It requires completely different though process which is completely radical or opposite to current understanding of science principle. You are tyring to fix the SCIENCE from what ever you know. Like a frog in a well, never seen how big is the ocean, has never has idea of ocean itself, things the well is only existence of water, and ocean is just false idea or nonsense.

The homeopathy is energy medicine which works with life force energy or vital force of body, which is governer or controller of our body to cure any diseases on physical and mental plane. The sameul hahnemann is only person who has understood this life fore energy principle and its application through nature's homeopathy principle.

Sorry I am not here to oppose you, or the current science or allopathy system of medicine, everything good, the current advancement in science is appreciated, but science is evolving, it is not end, there are many things in the nature phenomenon or activity, for which science dont have basic foundation, this is the truth.

The real scientist should think beyond the "science" and try to understand the acutal truth of homeopathy, its efficacy in treating many uncurable physical/mental problems, for which there is no cure in today's allopathy system of medicine. Try to analyze the successful treament and case study of world class homeopaths.

Let these 68 cases be treated by worldclass homeopaths or homeopathy international association and let them prove and certify that these cases cannot cured by homeopathy. Then only this artical has any truth.
