Another Andrew Wakefield Movie in the Works

This one will be largely based on the discredited anti-vaccine researcher’s 2010 book.

By | May 4, 2016

YOUTUBE, THE WELLNESS WAY CLINICSIt looks like notorious anti-vaccine researcher Andrew Wakefield will make it onto the silver screen yet again. A month ago, the documentary he co-directed, Vaxxed, premiered in New York City. Now, a Hollywood screenwriter—with cowriting credits on blockbusters including Shrek and Pirates of the Caribbean—intends to write a film adaptation of Wakefield’s 2010 book Callous Disregard: Autism and Vaccines—The Truth Behind a Tragedy.

By all appearances, the new film will be a sympathetic look at the life and work of Wakefield, whose claims that measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccines cause autism have been thoroughly debunked by reams of scientific research. Wakefield himself was repudiated by publishers and the U.K.’s General Medical Council for violating ethical standards. Similarly, the claims Wakefield made in Callous Disregard have been disproven. “[The book] is just terrible,” Joel Harrison, a retired epidemiologist who wrote a point-by-point takedown of Wakefield’s book in a 2013 The Open Vaccine Journal article, told STAT News. “If he handed it in as a term paper as an undergraduate, I wouldn’t pass him.”

Terry Rossio, the screenwriter taking on the new Wakefield movie project, has indicated that the film will highlight the work and life of the controversial researcher. “Dr. Wakefield is clearly a polarizing figure, reviled by the general public yet also revered by many,” he told Variety. “The details and drama surrounding his life are even more remarkable than generally known.”

sorry but this article is wrong.  Dr. Wakefield never said that the MMR caused autism.  I wish the media would stop trying to deceive the public.  He said that his 12 case studies(children) had a new never observed gastrointestinal disease and they had had some autistic characteristics.  Wakefield suggested it be studied more.

Another he said she said space-taker. Did not read the book, has not seen the movie, but submits a congealed glob of other people's opinions in 21 lines of nonsense.
Mr Grant, this is an example of what gets flunked in jr high.

Wakefield lies. That's been shown to a criminal standard of evidence.

It's interesting that his current lies, which he expressed during the Q and A following presentation of Quaxxed in New York, include that safety testing of the MMR vaccine was essentially limited to first injecting measles virus into the brains of monkeys and then injecting the vaccine directly into the brains of disabled children. He knows that he's lying and he lies anyway, but his ignorant audience eats it up.

Wakefield clearly stated his hypothesis regarding MMR and autism [Pediatrics. 2001 May;107(5):E] as follows:

1. MMR (as a multi-component vaccine) allows persistent gut infection with vaccine-strain measles virus

2. The gut infection with vaccine-strain measles virus produces a "leaky gut"

3. The leaky gut allows unidentified ("opioid") digestion products to somehow reach the brain

4. These unidentified digestion products somehow, somehow cause autism.

None of that is true.

This movie plan is fantastic, especially following the continual amazing run of his movie VAXXED which is appearing in more large cities every week  Evening shows with Q and A's following the filkm have all been selling out, even in very large theaters.  I have to admit I never liked "Autism Awareness Month" because we've all been aware for years, but this year was the best month of April ever.

Thank you Dr. Wakefield for seeking the truth and never giving up.  We are never going away.

If you want to reach the public, it is much more effective to make a movie or publish in Variety than it is to publish in Open Vaccine Journal (or The Scientist, I'm afraid). Who is working on dissemination of an accurate story through the media that the target audience trusts and sees, using a language to which that audience is receptive?

In other Hollywood news, I hear that they are working on another Spiderman movie that has many things presented as real, but these purported facts are disputed by just about every member of the Entomologial Society of America.

Appealing to heart is more effective than appealing to head! Fiction will gain over facts! Producers of films must check with  those with domain knowledge to sift the corn from the chaff. In medical themes the damage done will be irrevocable. They must think twice before encouraging such fiction to get the status of facts

That describes a lot of people.   Maz Zedong, Stalin, Hitler, Al Capone, Richard Nixon, Various serial killers, Bonnie & Clyde, etc.

the fiction that "vaccines are safe, vaccines save lives" has been appealing to people for years all over the world.  Now fortunately, we have a way to disseminate information that presents the true facts, especially in America where the third cause of death in this country are doctors and their mainstream medicine.

BTW Dr. Wakefield is a doctor.  As the CDC states, "Vaccines are unavoidably unsafe."  Anytime you have a drug that is described as such, you must give people the choice  whether or not to allow the drugs into their bodies or those of their children.  What makes medical doctors think they know all the answers?  They get about 1 hour of training in med school on vaccines.  The rest they pick up from biased other doctors and studies written in medical journals supported in large by the pharmaceutical companies.  Unvaccinated children rarely have to see a pediatrician because their immune systems are so on track.

It's interesting to see someone claim that "the CDC states 'Vaccines are unavoidably unsafe." The Supreme Court ruled that Congress did _not_ intend to indicate that vaccines are unavoidably unsafe and the Court specifically declined to apply that term to vaccines.

The Court was very clear in Bruesewitz v. Wyeth. Neither Congress nor the Court thinks vaccines are “unavoidably unsafe” in the way that anti-vaxxers repeatedly suggest.

OTOH, vaccine-preventable diseases are unsafe. For example, measles causes fever and discomfort as well as immune suppression that can facilitate other infections for up to several years--and can cause encephalitis and death.

I like that phrase "... also revered by many."   Not much of an endorsement since this just puts him in the company of Stalin, Hitler, Mao Tse Tung, Bonnie & Clyde,  Hugo  Chavez, Fidel Castro, etc. etc.   The connection between reverence by many and any measure of goodness it tenuous at best.
