Rob D'Angelo, Publisher
As the publisher of The Scientist, Rob brings more than 20 years of experience managing successful B-to-B media organizations within the pharma and life science industries. He has served as sales director at BioTechniques; president of the BioScience Group at Informa Business Information; and publisher at Advanstar Communications and Thomson/Medical Economics.
Mary Beth Aberlin, Editor-in-Chief
Mary Beth joined The Scientist in 2010 as deputy editor and became editor-in-chief in 2011. Setting out to become a physical organic chemist, she fell in love with the biomedical sciences after working in a virology lab following her master’s degree in chemistry, and went on to obtain a PhD in biology from the Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences. Mary Beth went into publishing after living in Costa Rica and Argentina and raising three kids. Before joining TS, she worked as managing editor of The Sciences and executive editor of Natural History.
Jennifer “Jef” Akst, Senior Editor
Jef got her master’s degree from Indiana University in April 2009 studying the mating behavior of seahorses. After four years of diving off the Gulf Coast of Tampa and performing behavioral experiments at the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga, she left research to pursue a career in science writing. Jef edits the magazine’s Features, Biobusiness, and Careers sections and writes articles across the publication.
Bob Grant, Senior Editor
Bob started with The Scientist as a staff writer in 2007. Before joining the team, he worked as a reporter at Audubon and earned a master’s degree in journalism from New York University. In his previous life, he pursued a career in science, getting a bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology from Montana State University and a master’s degree in marine biology from the College of Charleston in South Carolina. Bob edits Notebook, Reading Frames, Scientist to Watch, Speaking of Science and usually writes Capsule Reviews.
Kerry Grens, Associate Editor
Before returning to The Scientist in 2013, Kerry was the senior health and science reporter for WHYY in Philadelphia, and, later, a stringer for Reuters Health. Her first tenure at TS began in 2006 as a staff writer. In addition to writing features, news, and everything in between, Kerry edits The Literature, Modus Operandi, and Foundations. She has a master’s in biological sciences from Stanford University and a biology degree from Loyola University Chicago.
Tracy Vence, News Editor
Tracy joined The Scientist in 2013. Previously, she was a senior editor at Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News and at GenomeWeb’s Genome Technology. She has a master’s degree in journalism from Northeastern University in Boston and a bachelor’s degree in biology from Binghamton University in New York.

Lisa Modica, Art Director
Lisa has been Art Director of The Scientist since July 2012. Previously, she was Senior Graphic Designer at The Scientist, Senior Graphic Designer at Mighty Engine advertising agency, and Events Marketing Designer at Interweave Press. Lisa received her communication design certification from University of the Arts, and a bachelor’s degree in design and merchandising from Drexel University, both in Philadelphia, PA.
Erin Lemieux, Graphic Designer
Erin joined The Scientist in September 2012. Prior to coming to TS, she was a junior graphic designer at Fizzz Design Corp. in Toronto, Canada. She has a bachelor's degree in graphic design from OCAD University, and now resides in her hometown of Midland, Ontario.

Anita Bell, Account Executive
Anita started with LabX Media Group in July 2013 and worked as a Customer Account Manager for LabX.com. In April 2014, she joined the team at The Scientist. Anita graduated from the Journalism program at Humber College and studied Canadian History at York University in Toronto.
Melanie Dunlop, Account Executive (currently on maternity leave)
Melanie started with LabX Media Group in 2009 as the product manager for LabWrench and an account manager for LabX. In November 2011, she became the eastern account executive for The Scientist. She graduated from the Canadian Automotive Institute in Barrie, Ontario, and has a certificate in Automotive Business Studies.
Ashley Haire, Senior Account Executive
Ashley joined The Scientist team in 2011 when the brand became part of LabX Media Group. Previously, she was an account manager for Lab Manager and LabX, two other brands under the LabX Media Group umbrella. She has a Bachelor of Commerce Honours Degree from the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada.
Susan Harrison Uy, Engagement Manager, Life Sciences
Susan joined The Scientist in June 2014. She has a BA in human genetics from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, a PhD in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of Pittsburgh, and did her postdoctoral work in the Department of Neurology at the University of California, San Francisco.

Lee joined The Scientist in November 2010. He has more than 12 years experience in customer service and was a stockbroker for 5 years. He joined The Scientist for a change of pace, and enjoys helping people solve their problems.
