Peter Wagner
When Peter Wagner was 6 years old, he took apart his family's TV to explore its insides. Four years later, this founder of Zyomyx, the protein biochip manufacturer, transformed the basement of his parents' home into a chemistry lab. Rounding out this budding scientific image, Wagner, at 15, turned the chem lab into a locust farm. "It was an experiment that failed badly," says Wagner, a native of Germany. "There were a couple of events where my parents wished I would become a musician."

I left Germany in 1989 for Switzerland. I was always interested in interdisciplinary work, and I enjoy going to places to find smart people. I studied biochemistry and chemistry in Switzerland and Germany. I received a Humboldt Fellowship from Germany to study at Stanford. I arrived in the US in 1995.
