I worked in industrial pharmaceutical research for 25 years, side-by-side with other scientists trained and indoctrinated at major research universities. Evolving safety regulations was a constant headache, because, of course, PhD scientists do not need government interference to regulate safe behavior in their labs. That led to radioactive doorknobs, people walking the hallways wearing latex gloves, centrifuges with dried-blood interior coatings, and food and drink in the labs (surreptitiously). Some of these academic labs need an EPA "death penalty" to get their attention.
