Cat cloning company lives final life

A little under two years ago, Lou Hawthorne, CEO of Genetic Savings and Clone, told me that he hoped the pet cloning company would be profitable within two years, at which point it would consider an initial public offering. Apparently, they didn?t make it. News outlets reported last week that the company had sent letters to all of its clients announcing it would be closing by the end of the year. Clients could continue to bank their pets? DNA with a sister company, Austin, Texas-based Viagen. That service started in the hundreds of dollars when Genetic Savings and Clone was offering it.

If they?re gone for good, I?ll miss the company, which I wrote several stories about starting in late 2004, when I saw their cloned cats Tabouli and Baba Ghanoush on display at the annual New York Cat Show. The price then was $50,000 per cloned cat, but it was lowered to $32,000 last year.

I called Hawthorne to find out what?s going on, but only got his cell phone?s outgoing message, which said he was with ?Bio-Art.? I assume that has something to do with the Bio-Art and Research Corp ? better known as BARC, Genetic Savings and Clone?s predecessor. I?ll let you know if I hear back from him.

Genetic Savings and Clone has permanently closed. Viagen does not clone pets. Cloning is being replaced with more
current technology by the Japanese. I'll bet
Viagen was hoping to make $$$ with patent
royalties, so much for that idea.....

The greatest cat to clone

I wound up with a cat with whom could not be cared for. I don't take in cats. This was a friend situation. I said bring the cat over, I'll interview him, Ya know, "How long have you been a cat, do you know where the litter box is," the usual. She opened the cage and out walked the most beautiful cat anyone has ever seen ! He's a Himalayan Ragdoll with perfect Siamese coloring. He has the best temperment of any cat. This would be the cat to clone. I would be interested in cloning him for kittens to sell. Ask for pictures.

Hawthorne said in a telephone interview that "reports to date (about the closure) have been inaccurate" and that he was not authorized to comment.

I strongly believe that any kind of cloning is wrong, and against nature! We are all part of the same family on this earth and we humans have an obligation of stewardship, not unreigned experimentation on other living beings!
