A reader recently posted an interesting comment about a site called Scientists without Borders (http://scientistswithoutborders.nyas.org/Splash.aspx?ReturnURL=/default.aspx), a networking site designed to help scientists boost basic research in the developing world. The story she commented on is here: http://www.the-scientist.com/article/display/54777/

I like the idea of this site. Has anyone tried it or have any opinions about it?

Boosting Basic Research

There's a story that in 1948 Ben-Gurion, Israel's first prime minister, recieved a petition to establish a 5-days work week to replace the 6 work-days week in the then circa 700,000 popopulation Israel.

"It's a good idea", he responded, "let's start by first learning to work properly one day a week, then advance to two days a week, etc., until we learn to work 5 days a week..."

Now: "...help scientists boost basic research in the developing world..."?

How about boosting basic research in the Western, especially in the USA, world?

See "Science, Or Technology Innovations?"
