Last Fall, I visited STEMCELL Technologies, a Vancouver-based biotech company, for a story I wrote for the February issue of the magazine. Before then, I had written a heck of a lot about stem cells, but I'd never actually seen them in the flesh, so to speak.
Peering down the microscope at human embryonic stem cells as they clustered to form embryoid bodies was a sight to behold. But it wasn't anywhere near as beautiful as the winning images from the first California Institute for Regenerative Medicine stem cell image contest. The image of a neurosphere of neural precursor cells shooting out processes that will eventually form the axons of mature neurons is especially captivating.
Check out the all the winners on flickr.
