I read with interest the replies so far, and as one who has spent the past 15 years training communication skills to scientists and engineers my comment would be this. Its not that scientists fail in being able to communicate to each other, in fact long and detailed communications are the mode. Clarity is important in order to understand each other and make progress. Where the gap comes is our ability as scientists and engineers to communicate to the ley public in ways that are not bound to generate boredom or on the other hand create a sensations of imminent disaster. How we handle interactions with the public, press and TV on these occasions is critical. Bridging that gap is one of the most important skills a scientist can learn.
