(Philadelphia, PA - October, 2003) The Scientist magazine along with the Sabin Vaccine Institute of New Caanan, CT and GTCBIO will host the conference "Vaccines: From Political, Socioeconomic, Scientific, Provider, User, and Legal Viewpoints", October 22-24 at the Hitlon Crystal City Hotel in Arlington, VA, just outside of Washington, D.C. to examine several aspects of vaccine research and development.
"The goals of this conference are to increase the awareness of what can be done with vaccines, and make them more acceptable to society," says Daniel Zimmermean, senior vice president of immunotherapeutics developer Cel-Sci Corporation, Vienna VA, and chairman of the conference committee.
Presentations will be made by authorities from several fields including medical experts, government officials, venture capitalists and attorneys. Among the speakers and their topics include:
- Dr. Lester Crawford, deputy commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, a background on FDA's experience with vaccnes.
- Henry A. Waxman, US Representative, legislative developments affecting vaccines
- Dr. Neal Halsey, director of the Institute of Vaccine Safety at Johns Hopkins University, vaccine safety I today's world and perspectives for the future
- Dr. Ciro de Quadros, director of the Sabin Vaccine Institute's International programs, the use and power of vaccines to control and eradicate diseases
The keynote address will be given by Dr. Lance K. Gordon, CEO of Vaxgen, Inc. on "Vaccines for bioterrorisim agents" October 22 at 7:30 PM.
