Energy burning baby fat

In our January issue Bruce Spiegelman discusses his work on the molecular switches that govern fat-cell differentiation. Once he discovered the switch for white fat, he went on to find the molecular trigger of brown-fat cell differentiation. Brown fat contains mitochondria that convert food into heat rather than producing the ATP that power cellular processes, a potentially useful target for obesity drugs.
