Meet the LaWVA judges

Steven Wiley is the lead biologist at the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and a member of The Scientist’s editorial advisory board. He is the head of PNNL's systems biology program and his work focuses on mechanisms of cell communication and signaling. He is also one of the architects of the program's prize-winning Web site that Google has ranked among the top ten systems biology Web sites.

Todd Miller is the creative director at The Archer Group – an Internet marketing firm. He has spearheaded the Internet launch of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and award-winning designs for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Nike, Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, and DuPont. Miller has also collaborated with the publishers of The Scientist on the Web site of Biotech360, a magazine covering all aspects of biotechnology.

Steve Jackson is professor of biology in the department of zoology at Cambridge University, UK, studying DNA repair and DNA damage signaling.  Jackson is a senior group leader in the Wellcome Trust/Cancer Research UK Gurdon Institute of Cancer and Developmental Biology, and was recently appointed Head of Cancer Research UK Laboratories in the Institute.  He is a member of The Scientist's editorial advisory board.

Jean-Claude Bradley is an associate professor of chemistry and the e-learning coordinator for the College of Arts and Sciences at Drexel University. He leads the UsefulChem project, an initiative started in the summer of 2005 that publishes all research work in real time to a collection of public blogs, wikis, and other Web pages. Bradley coined the term "open notebook science" to distinguish this approach from other more restricted forms of open science.

Attila Csordás is a research scientist in the Gene Therapy Center at Tulane University.  He is the author of Pimm—Partial Immortalization, a blog about the crossroads of science, technology, and the Web. This past April on his blog, Csordas proposed a competition for the best lab Web sites.  He has been a consultant to The Scientist on the LaWVA project.


Matthew LaPointe is the Web team lead and creative director at the J. Craig Venter Institute.  He has a Bachelor’s degree from George Mason University in digital arts and animation, and has worked in the Web and graphics field for ten years in non-profit, for-profit, and government organizations.  In the winter he will enter the MBA program at Johns Hopkins University.



Elizabeth Kerr is the director of science and technology markets for Apple, Inc, and a member of The Scientist’s editorial advisory board. Before joining Apple, Kerr worked as a staff scientist on the scientific liaison group at Affymetrix and then transitioned into the marketing group. She completed her Ph.D. in immunology at Stanford University.
