MALGORZATA RAKMitochondria play a major role in maintaining stable internal temperatures in endothermic species. Using a temperature-sensitive fluorescent probe to measure mitochondrial temperatures in cultured human cells, researchers found that they could reach temperatures as high as 50 °C.
