Researchers reported last week (March 14) in Science Translational Medicine that they have developed an imaging platform that allows a 3-D analysis of how bacterial infections affect tissue at the molecular level. James Cassat, a pediatrician and microbiologist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and colleagues used a combination of imaging techniques to detect changes in the abundance and location of proteins in mouse tissue infected by Staphylococcus aureus. The technique may make it possible to diagnose and study infections without requiring them to be cultured.
