Soviets Featured at AAAS Meeting

SHIYAN,executive officer for Soviet-American research exchange programs. "We've booked their rooms and done everything we can," said meetings manager Arthur Hersch man. "But until they get off the plane [February 10] we won't know for sure who's coming." Herschman does know that attendance at this year's meeting will be considerably higher than the 2,800 who registered at last year's meeting in Chicago. He said that AAAS was forced to reserve blocks of rooms at three additional hotels to handle the heavy response. This year's meeting also features three-day seminars on protein fold ing, reproductive biology and ma rine ecosystems. Begun last year with a sucessfull mini-meeting on advances in neuroscience, the seminars are meant to counter complaints that AAAS does not offer a sufficient number of symposia on a single topic to appeal to scientists not interested in the range of issues addressed at the annual meeting. Registration fees for the annual meeting have remained at $65 for members and $35 for students. A $95 fee for non-members, a $15 in crease, comes with a six-month trial subscription to Science, an experiment expected to generate a few hundred new memberships. Within AAAS, a $5 dues increase goes into effect in May to meet rising costs in publishing and mailing the weekly magazine. Regular membership will cost $70 annually. The new president of the AAAS, University of Chicago physicist Walter Massey, will take office at the close of the meeting. He will succeed Sheila Widnall of MIT. During balloting last fall Richard Atkinson, chancellor of the University of California at San Diego and a former director of the National Science Foundation, was chosen president-elect. Harold Amos of Harvard Medical School and Eugene Cota-Robles of the University of California at Berkeley were elected to four-year terms on the AAAS board of directors. The inaugural AAAS award for public understanding of science and technology will be given next weekend to physicist Philip Morrison of MIT. Accompanied by a $2,500 prize, the award was established to improve communication between scientists and the public. Morrison is being honored for a lifetime commitment to that task, most recently as creator and host of "The Ring of Truth," a six-part television series on the inner workings of science. This year's meeting will run for four days, one day less than the traditional length. Next year's meeting in San Francisco will cover six days because of concurrent sessions with the American Physical Society and the American Association of Physics Teachers. The joint meeting is an experiment to increase the popularity of AAAS's annual meeting, which has suffered declining attendance throughout the 1980s.
