Microbiological assays enable scientists to learn more about bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic pathogens, including their growth, metabolism, cellular effects, and drug sensitivity or resistance. Because these experiments often require repeated measurements over time while maintaining optimal environmental conditions, researchers frequently rely on microplate readers.

In this video, BMG LABTECH spoke with Andrew Roe, a microbiologist from the University of Glasgow, about how his team uses microplate readers and reporter assays to study bacterial pathogens and the genes expressed during infection.
