VOLUME 5, No:23 The Scientist November 25, 1991 Research FUNDING BRIEFS ONR Funds Young Researchers The Office of Naval Research will offer grant support this year to approximately 14 young academic researchers through its Young Investigator Program. ONR receives approximately 300 applications for the program annually. The Young Investigator Program is open to any United States citizen holding a tenure-track position at a U.S. university or college who received a Ph.D. or equivalent degree on or after Dec. 1, 1986. Eligible research areas are mathematics, ocean science, the physical sciences, and engineering. Successful candidates receive $75,000 of research support per year for three years, with the possibility of additional funding for equipment purchase or through matching funds from another Navy organization. Naval Labs' Postdoc Program Another series of grants from the U.S. Navy, the Office of Naval Technology's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, offers approximately 40 new postdoctoral appointments at naval laboratories each year. The program seeks to involve creative academic and industrial scientists and engineers in research relevant to naval technologies. Eligible fields of study include acoustics, biotechnology, computer software, biomedicine, simulation, oceanography, and materials science. U.S. citizens who have received doctoral degrees within the past seven years are eligible to apply. Awards are for one year and are renewable for a second year, depending upon the availability of funds. Base annual stipends range from $36,000 to $52,000, depending on the applicant's academic specialty and level of experience. In the second year, the stipend increases by $1,000. Funds for relocation and professional travel are also available. Applicants are encouraged to work closely with a Navy laboratory or research and development center to develop a suitable research proposal. Application deadlines are January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1. ACS Supports Polymer Education The American Chemical Society offers a range of awards to support polymer education. College and university faculty members may submit proposals for two awards in the field. Proposals may involve any area of curriculum development or enhancement, including design of a single course or course sequence or development of software, video presentations, laboratory sequences, and the like. A $10,000 award, distributed over three years, is given for a broad-impact proposal targeted at improving the teaching of polymer chemistry and polymer engineering in existing college and university courses. A second, $2,500 award is given to a faculty member whose institution currently has no polymer course or is in the first three years of initiating one. Application deadline is January 1. Grants For Scientific Education Also offered by the American Chemical Society is the Petroleum Research Fund, which provides partial grant support for scientific conferences, meetings, symposia, and other educational activities. Eligible ventures include programs to develop and promote innovations in science education, partial funding for industrial scientists and engineers to teach or help teach college and university courses, and partial payment of travel expenses for foreign scientists and engineers to participate in meetings in the United States. Projects most likely to be funded are those that offer educational opportunities to the broadest segment of the U.S. scientific community at the undergraduate level and beyond.
