Speakers' Fund For Women Geoscientists The Association for Women Geoscientists has received a $9,000 grant for three years from Phillips Petroleum to fund travel costs of members serving as speakers. The AWG Speakers Bureau maintains a list of 120 nationally recognized women geoscientists who are available for speaking engagements. Nonprofit, nongovernment organizations needing speakers to discuss geoscience topics can apply. Up to $300 in direct travel costs is available. The deadline for applications is August 15. Support For AIDS Research The American Foundation for AIDS Research (AmFAR) offers research grants, short-term travel grants, and three-year scholar awards. $50,000 for one year to support AIDS-related biomedical and social science research. Principal investigators should be M.D.'s, Ph.D.'s, or equivalent, and must be affiliated with an appropriate institution. Small grants of up to $5,000 are available to postdoctoral investigators for travel purposes. Funds must be used to support study or training at a U.S. institution other than the applicant's. Foreign investigators may apply to study in the U.S. Scholar grants are provided for nontenured postdoctoral researchers. Amounts of up to $102,000 for three years' work are available. The deadline for preapplication letters of intent is August 21. Applications will be solicited from the submitted preapplications in October, and awards will be made in February. NSF Money For Conservation Research The National Science Foundation has announced a second competition for proposals to investigate the restoration and conservation of natural communities. Scientists studying various aspects of naturally occurring ecosystems, communities, species, and populations are encouraged to apply for these multiyear awards, which in 1990 ranged from $50,000 to $460,000. NSF officials don't know yet how much money will be available in fiscal year 1991. Though the biodiversity program from which officials had hoped to draw most of their funding was cut sharply, program managers pieced together $3.2 million, only slightly short of the $3.5 million requested for 1990. Investigators, who are to apply through the appropriate NSF directorates, should supply an explanation of the conservation or restoration emphasis of their work. The deadline is September 29. NCI Offers Grants For Animal Studies The National Cancer Institute is looking for scientists who can present domestic animal models for investigations of cancer-causing viruses. Some virally infected mammals have developed neoplastic and Kaposi's sarcoma-like lesions, and NCI scientists believe that the study of domestic animal retroviruses can lead to a better understanding of cancer induction. But progress has been limited because so few scientists are working on these animals. The institute is encouraging research on cows, horses, sheep, goats, and pigs, rather than on dogs, cats, mice, primates, or birds, because not as much work has been done with the former group. The open-ended awards can range from one to five years. Applications are accepted on a continuing basis for deadlines October 1, February 1, and June 1. For more information, contact Kenneth J.
