The significance of this paper as well as the accompanying papers in the same issue of Cell, by Erich Nigg's group at the Swiss Institute for Experimental Cancer Research (pages 591-60) and Frank McKeon's group at Harvard University (pages 579-89), must be considered in relation to the rapid progress that has occurred in the cell cycle field. I would have imagined that the cell cycle would be figured out by going from the understanding of particular processes, such as mitosis and DNA replication, to a reconstruction of their regulation.
