The popularity of this paper in the scientific community, suggests Peter Lansbury, Jr., a professor of chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, may be due to the fact that "it was among the first to provide a chemical, mechanistic approach" to explaining the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease with respect to amyloid plaque formation.
