Culpeper Funds Medical Scholars The Charles E. Culpeper Foundation Scholarships in Medical Science provide financial support for the career development of young academic physicians. Any accredited U.S. medical school can apply for up to three years of funding, in the name of a desired candidate, for awards of up to $100,000 per year. Three awards are scheduled for funding this year. Parameters for research topics are wide; anything that has relevance to human health is acceptable. However, the physician must have received his or her M.D. in 1982 or later from a U.S. school. Awardees will receive full-time faculty positions, and will spend 75 percent of their time working on the research program. Applications are due August 15. Selection will be announced by January 15, 1991, and funds will be available July 1. For more information, contact the Charles E. Awards For Dermatology Research Since its establishment in 1964, the Dermatology Foundation has provided financial assistance for skin research. Three types of awards are currently available. Career Development Awards in Skin Research, begun in 1989, are the most recent addition to the foundation's roster. This program was established to ease a researcher's transition from fellowship recipient to established investigator. Funding of $40,000 per year for up to three years is offered to junior investigators in biomedical research. In addition, the foundation offers postdoctoral fellowships, in the amount of $25,000 for one year, for research in dermatology, cutaneous biology, and photobiology of the skin. One-year grants of up to $10,000, intended to initiate research projects, are also available. Applications should come from investigators who are affiliated with an appropriate institution. Environmental Health Projects Sought The Washington-based International Life Sciences Institute Research Foundation seeks to expand research in toxicology and environmental health, including human nutrition, by awarding grants to young investigators. Molecular biologists, geneticists, neuropharmacologists, neurobiologists, behavioral scientists, and immunologists are encouraged to apply for one of at least two awards of up to $100,000 over three years. Applicants should be new faculty in their first full-time academic position and in the process of setting up a research program. In toxicology, ILSI encourages research that will lead to increased confidence in applying results of animal studies to humans, and more work on differential toxicological effects. In environmental health, ILSI seeks proposals on the mechanisms by which environmental influences such as diet affect growth, development, and aging. Applications are due September 1. Princeton Foundation Offers Fellowships Three-year postdoctoral fellowships are available from the Life Sciences Research Foundation to graduates of medical schools or graduate schools in the biological sciences. Proposed work in the life sciences must be performed at nonprofit institutions, either in the U.S. or abroad. Foreign scientists are eligible to apply, as long as their work is done in the U.S. Applicants will be judged on the basis of their previous research record as well as the merit of the proposed work. The foundation is especially interested in scientists who previously have specialized in other areas of the biological sciences and would like to change their focus. The foundation actively seeks financial support from industry, other foundations, and individuals for the fellowships. The amount of the fellowships is $35,000 per year. Candidates should apply no later than October 1.
