PEOPLE AWARDS DEATHS OPPORTUNITIES ETCETERA MEETINGS NEW PUBLICATIONS Clayton F. Caills, director-at-large of the American Chemical Society board, has been elected ACS president for 1989. Callis retired from his position as director of environmental operations for Monsanto Fibers & Intermediates Co. in 1985, and became vice president of Chelan Associates, an environmental consulting firm in St. Louis. Ernest L. Ellel, ACS board chairman and WR. Kenan Professor of Chemistry at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and Helen M. Free, professional relations consultant for Miles Laboratories, were voted ACS directors at-large. NedD. Heindel, H.S. Bunn Professor at Lehigh University, and Jean'ne M. Shreeve, associate vice president for research and dean of graduate school at the University of Idaho, were elected regional directors. Paul F. Agrls, former director of the University of Missouri Division of Biological Sciences Biotechnology Center, became head of the biochemistry department at North Carolina State University on January 1. He succeeds Samuel B. Tove, who has remained in the department teaching and conducting research. Agris is also president of the American Foundation for Aging Research, and plans to establish its headquarters at NCSU. David Baltimore, director of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research in Cambridge, was elected vice chairman of the scientists' Institute for Public Information board of trustees. Baltimore won the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine in 1975 for his research on reverse transcriptase and its role in the growth of retroviruses. He received his Ph.D. from Rockefeller University in 1964. In November, the Westinghouse Electric Corporation Research and Development Center in Churchill, Pa., consolidated its operations into four divisions under newly-appointed general managers. Donald K. Fox was made general manager of the science technology division, Susan Wood became general manager of the materials technology division, Francis T. Thompson was appointed general manager of the engineering technology division, and Roland R. Roehrlch was named general manager of the technology operations division. John K. Huim, a physicist with expertise in super conductivity, was appointed chief scientist, and R. Dee Haun Jr. was named deputy chief scientist. Donald L. Smith became director of administration and finance. James Michael Connor, Wellcome TrustSenior Lecturer in medical genetics at the University of Glasgow, assumed the university's Burton Chair of medical genetics on December 1. Connor has also been appointed director of the West of Scotland Regional Genetic Service, a center dedicated to preventing handicaps caused by genetic disease and congenital malformation. He served two years in medicine and surgery at Liverpool Royal Infirmary and Broadgreen Hospital in Liverpool, and spent a year as an internal medicine resident at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md. Anthea Tinker, principal research officer at the U.K. Department of the Environment, will become director of the Age Concern Institute of Gerontology, at King's College London, on February 2. The Age Concern Institute was founded in January 1986, following an agreement between Age Concern England and King's College London, to create an international research and teaching center. Two faculty members at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute were recently honored. Jan van Eys, head of the division of pediatrics, assumed the newly created Mosbacher Pediatrics Chair. Donald Pikel, chief of pediatric leukemia, was appointed to the Irving and Nadine Mansfield and Robert David Levitt Cancer Research Chair. Helmut Schwarz, most recently professor of chemistry at the Technical University of Berlin, has been named chairman of mass spectrometry and director of the mass spectrometry research unit at the University College of Swansea, Wales. Schwarz has served as deputy director of the Institute of Chemistry of the Technical University of Berlin and as vice dean of the university's faculty of science. William G. Howard Jr.,former senior vice president and director of research and development for Motorola Inc., has been named a senior fellow of the National Academy of Engineering and chairman of a NAE study of industrial commercialization. Howard earned bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering from Cornell University and a Ph.D. in the same field from the University of California, Berkeley. Philip R. Dodge, former chairman of the pediatrics department at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis has been appointed special assisant to the director for mental retardation research at the National nstitute of Child Health and Human Development. Dodge received his medical degree in 1948 from the University of Rochester in New York. Douglas E. Olesen, former executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Battelle Memorial Institute in Ohio, has been elected institute president and chief executive officer. Olesen has been with Battelle since 1967. He succeeds Ronald S. Paul, who is retiring but will continue to serve as an associate trustee. John James Skehel, former head of the virology division and head of The infectious and immunity group at the National Institute for Medical Research, Mill Hill, London, became director of the institute on December 1. He succeeds DA. Rees, who became secretary of the council on October 1. Skehel has been with the institute since 1969 and is best known for his studies on influenza virus. Joseph C. Arcos, Environmental Protection Agency senior science adviser, has been named clinical professor emeritus at the Tulane University School of Medicine. Arcos was a member of the Tulane faculty from 1960 until 1980, when he joined the EPA. William D.P. Stewart, a plant and microbial physiologist, became secretary to the British Agricultural and Food Research Council on January 1. Stewart, Royal Society Assessor to the council, succeeds John Jinks, who died in June. The New York Academy of Sciences presented a number of scientific awards at its annual meeting last month in New York: C. Everett Koop, Surgeon General, received the NYAS Presidential Award; Donald E. Knuth, Stanford University, was presented the NYAS Award; Francis H. Ruddle, Yale University, was given the NYAS Award in biological and medical sciences; Ching-Wu Chu, University of Houston, received the NYAS Award in physical and mathematical sciences; Roger N. Shepard, Stanford University, was presented the NYAS Award in the behavioral sciences; Dorothy Hirsch,. Committee of Concerned Scientists, Inc., was given the NYAS Award in recognition of services in behalf of the human rights of scientists; James F. Guselia, Harvard Medical School, received the A. Cressy Morrison Award in natural sciences; Arthur C. Ruge and Edward E. Simmons Jr., inventors, were presented the Boris Pregel Award for applied science and technology; Robert Thorne, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, was given the Minors and Ethel Tsutsui Distinguished Graduate Research Award in science; Steven A. Seigeibaum, College of Physicians & urgeons, Columbia University, received the Herbert J. Kayden Award in biomedical science supported by the Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Foundation; Barbara Ann Baird, Cornell University, was presented the Dr. Harold Lamport Award for Young Investigators in physiology or biophysics; Saul Krugman, New York University School of Medicine, was given the Sarah L. Poiley Memorial Award; and Robert Fischell, Johns Hopkins University, received the I.B. Laskowitz Award for research in aerospace engineering sciences, support systems and components. The University of Texas Medical Branch awarded citations to nine members of the National Student Research Forum for research presented at NSRF's annual meeting in Galveston. Julie C. Skinner, University of Wisconsin Medical School, received the American Medical Association Education and Research Foundation (AMA ERF) clinical research award. The AMA-ERF award for excellence in research was also presented to Kenneth J. Washenik, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, along with the Mead Johnson award for excellence in research by a graduate student. Michael R. Swartz received the Mead Johnson award for excellence in research by a medical student, and Scott M. Dinehard, University of Texas Medical Branch, was presented the Mead Johnson award for excellence in research by a resident or intern. Three clinical sciences awards were presented by Roche Laboratories to: Glenn N. Saxe, a medical student at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario; a graduate student at the University of Tennessee; and to Anne-Marie Marcoux, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Piscataway. Roche Laboratory basic science awards were given to Timothy Clark, University of Alberta, Edmonton, and to Matthew I. Wahl, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Nashville, Tenn. Edmund Potter, chief research scientist at the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, received the Japanese Institute of Electrostatics Award of Merit at the institute's annual conference in Fukui. Potter, who has been with the CSIRO division of fossil fuels for almost 20 years, was recognized for his work using electrostatic precipitation to cleanup power station emissions. Four French scientists received IBM-France 1987 Scientific Prizes in November: Joseph Zyss, for modeling quadratic non-linear interactions in organic crystals; Pierre-Louis Lions, for his solution of Boltzmann equations related to gas dynamics; Jean-Marie Dubois,experimental studies in the structure of metallic glass; and Jean-Daniel Boissonnat, for his work in algorithmic geometry applied to the automated construction of 3-D models and the planning of trajectories in robotics. Silke Bernhard, director of the Dahlem Konferenzen, received an honorary degree in November from the philosophical-natural sciences faculty of the University of Basel, Switzerland, for her development of the Dahlem Konferenzen and other international conferences that unite natural scientists. Choh Hao Li, 74, an expert in hormone research and professor emeritus of biochemistry and experimental endocrinology at the University of California, San Francisco, died November 28 in Berkeley, Calif. Li is recognized internationally for having isolated and purified eight of the nine hormones produced by the pituitary gland, including human growth hormone and beta-endorphin. Born in Canton, Li received a chemistry degree from the University of Nanking in 1933 and completed his doctorate in physico-organic chemistry at the University of California in Berkeley in 1938. Alexandre Rothen, 87, professor emeritus of the Rockefeller University, died December 12 in Mon Pélerin, Switzerland. Rothen was a physical chemist with expertise in the chemical reactions of extremely thin films at the borderline between liquids and solids. He came to Rockefeller in 1927 and developed the ellipsometer, an instrument that measures the thickness of protein layers, in the 1940s. Kent K. Curtis, 60, chief scientist of the National Science Foundation, died of cancer December 17 at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. Curtis joined NSF in 1967 and had been director of the division of computer and computation research since 1984. He was born in Charles City, Iowa, graduated from Yale University and received a master's degree in physics from Dartmouth College. The American Geological Institute is sponsoring a 1988-89 Minority Participation Program for undergraduate and graduate geoscience majors who are U.S. citizens and members of ethnic minority groups that are least represented in the geosciences. The Oregon Health Sciences University's Vollum institute for Advanced Biomedical Research will receive several hundred thousand dollars over the next three years from Cambridge NeuroScience Research, Inc. to fund the development of new drugs to treat neurological disorders.
