Carl M. Mansfield, professor and chairman of radiation therapy and nuclear medicine at Thomas Jefferson University, has been elected president-elect of the American Radium Society. The new president is Morris J. Wizenberg, attending radiation therapist and head of the division of radiation oncology at Mercy Health Center in Oklahoma City. The 800-member ARS, founded in 1916, is an interdisciplinary society of cancer physicians dedicated to promoting cancer research and encouraging cooperation and exchange between medical specialists.
Ernest T.S. Walton, Ireland's only Nobel Prize winner in science, has retired at age 83 from his position on the Board of the School of Cosmic Physics at Dublin's Institute of Advanced Studies. Walton was the originator, along with J.D. Crockroft, of the artificial disintegration of atomic nuclei by accelerated beams of atomic particles.
