This article is the formal taxonomic description of a new species of whitefly in the genus Bemisia. "In the two years before the paper came out, this species was responsible for three-quarters of a billion dollars' worth of economic loss in agriculture in North America alone," relates Thomas S. Bellows, a professor of entomology at the University of California, Riverside. "The significance of the paper is that it provides a name with which to associate the vast amount of research generated about this very serious pest, which is now the subject of extensive entomological research."
