We determined the structure of the InsP3 receptor by cDNA cloning. We also showed that the InsP3 receptor itself has an InsP3 binding site and that it forms a calcium channel on the endoplasmic reticulum. We proved that the InsP3 receptor is a new type of calcium channel, different from the ligand-operated ion channels so far analyzed. The homology to InsP3 receptor was found only in the ryanodine receptor on the sarcoplasmic reticulum specifically developed in skeletal muscle.
