Wright (University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas): "This paper describes the use of a novel cell line that overexpresses regulatory factors for the identification, cloning, and initial characterization of myogenin, a protein that regulates the decision of muscle cells to differentiate. Trans- fection of a myogenin cDNA into C3H10T1/2 fibroblastoid stem cells causes their conversion into muscle cells. The discovery that myogenin shared a region of the myc homology domain with the muscle regulatory factor MyoD1 established that there was a family of related proteins controlling myogenesis. Simultaneously with our work, other investigators used the myc homology domain to independently clone myogenin and additional family members.
