While evaluating the environmental impact of an anticipated mountain bike trail, US Forest Service and Ohio University wildlife intern Kyle Brooks keeps coming across Eastern box turtles. “I was especially intrigued by the remarkable variation in their carapace patterns,” Brooks tells The Scientist in an email. When he happens upon a turtle, he records its location and estimates its age and sex.

“This data will allow me to get a rough idea of where these box turtles are in the national forest, how they move about, and how the planned mountain bike trail might possibly impact [them]."
