Cells within the growing root tip of an Arabidopsis plant elongate and divide, driving it forward in search of nutrients.

Time lapse of an Arabidopsis root tip, approximately 130 µm in diameter, with fluorescent-labelled nuclei in magenta and cell membranes in green. Images were obtained every 15 minutes for 17 hours using a confocal microscope and custom software for automatic tracking of the moving sample. Approximate growth rate of up to 300 µm per hour
