With the growing recognition of biodiversity's critical importance to ecological balance and economic growth, the role that microbes play is receiving new appreciation in the scientific community. J.C. Hunter-Cevera is committed to biodiversity because she believes that natural products can provide solutions to many biotechnological problems, including therapeutic drug development and polluted site cleanups. As president of the U.S. Federation of Culture Collections, she works to preserve and increase our knowledge of microbial biodiversity, in part by isolating and cataloging microbes. And as president of the Society for Industrial Microbiology, she works closely with the National Science Foundation and other groups in Washington, D.C. to promote the potential applications of microbes in health care, agriculture, and other areas.
