However, I would like to add that other animals besides rodents have been developed for in vivo genetic toxicity testing. ABEL Scientific (formerly Mariner Biolabs) was covered by Ricki Lewis in "Biotech Blooms at the University of Georgia."2 ABEL Scientific's technology capitalizes on the work of Richard Winn at the University of Georgia. ABEL Scientific offers genotoxicity testing services based on transgenic fish that carry the lambda vector and recoverable mutation target genes. The fish are being used not only to assess the potential health hazards associated with exposure to chemicals in the aquatic environment (where they have obvious relevance), but also as adjuncts to or replacements for more traditional testing methods using rodents.
