The Eppendorf Pipet Helper is designed for use with glass and plastic pipets to aid filling and dispensing. Vacuum is applied by a slide lever, reportedly eliminating hand stress caused by the conventional "squeeze bulb" apparatus. The product enables one-handed control of aspiration, dispensing, and vacuum. Features include a lightweight handle; single rocker-switch for control of aspiration and delivery; and a disposable, in-line filter. The device holds 0.1 ml to 100 ml pipets. The filter and pipet connector are autoclavable. Brinkmann Instruments Inc. Westbury, NY The system features preassembled filter cartridges and a dispensing gun, said to be capable of generating up to five times the pressure obtained with manual filter systems. The filter cartridges are available with 3.9 cm2 surface area in a choice of nylon or PTFE and 0.45 mm or 0.22 mm porosity. They are coupled to either a 5 ml or 10 ml polypropylene reservoir. The reservoir and filter cartridge are then connected to the dispensing gun and the trigger is depressed. The increased pressure obtained with the gun combined with the large surface area and prefilter is said to speed filtration and eliminate back-pressure problems associated with particulate-laden samples. For DNA sequencing, the IR2 system reportedly can sequence more than 100 kb per day, with up to 64 samples per run. The system is claimed to offer 800 to 1,200 base readlengths and features Simultaneous Bi-directional Sequencing strategies. For genetic analysis, the system is said to be capable of running up to 9,000 genotypes per day. Sizing and quantitation are performed with LI-COR's Gene ImagIR software, which features an integrated relational database. Other applications for the IR2 system include mutation analysis, HLA typing, human identification, linkage, mapping, and phylogenetic studies. LI-COR Inc. Lincoln, NE The Whole Gel Eluter and Mini Whole Gel Eluter are electroelution tools that simultaneously elute and collect multiple protein bands from whole polyacrylamide gels. Whole Gel Eluting extracts all proteins through the thickness of a preparative gel (SDS or native PAGE). Individual bands or groups of closely spaced bands reportedly are collected in liquid fractions within 25 minutes. The Whole Gel Eluter is suitable for standard-size gels (14 cm x 16 cm or larger); the Mini Whole Gel Eluter accommodates both handcast and precast mini-gels. Bio-Rad Laboratories Hercules, CA SectionLock slides are designed to prevent tissue sections from falling off the slide during harsh staining procedures such as in situ hybridization. They are treated with a specially formulated aminoalkysilane to give them a strong positive charge, which forms a bond with negatively charged tissue samples. The slides require no activation and are precleaned and ready for use. They are color-coded for easy documentation. The slides measure 25 mm x 75 mm x 1 mm and come in boxes of 72. Polysciences Inc. Warrington, PA Drummond Scientific Co.'s gel-loading pipet is designed to deliver samples up to 50 ml. It is suitable for a variety of electrophoresis gel applications and features an autoclavable polycarbonate plastic tip. The pipet plunger does not come into contact with the sample, reportedly eliminating cross-contamination and carry-over. A blowout function is provided for quantitative measurement.
