The first automatic cell separator, Centritech Cell, is now being marketed by Alfa-Laval Centritech, located in Tumba, Sweden. Consequently, biomedical, biochemical, and biotechnical laboratories conducting research involving the cultivation and isolation of living cells can now purchase a cell separator that yields both high cell concentrations and optimal numbers of living cells. The centrifugal process used for separation is gentle and avoids all fragmentation (often seen because of mammalian cell fragility and sensitivity to shear force), while at the same time eliminating contamination of the cell/liquid phase. Separation and draining are accomplished continually and automatically.

All cells are handled in a sterile, disposable insert, which eliminates the need for further sterilization as well as the chance of leakage. A transparent lid permits observation of the separation process from the outside of the machine. As an option, Alfa-Laval Centritech offers a builtin stroboscope to “freeze” the process during operation.
