Career Development Advice

"Every research scientist needs to develop leadership skills." This was the take-home message of a breakfast seminar cosponsored by The Scientist and Bristol-Myers Squibb Pharmaceutical Research Institute for attendees of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology/American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics meeting in Boston, June 6. The seminar panel consisted of Michelle Graham, director of leadership development and strategic planning, Peter Kiener, director of immunology, inflammation, and respiratory drug discovery, and Martyn Banks, director of discovery screening, all at the research institute. Kiener told the audience of more than 80, mostly postdoc, scientists that all researchers, in whatever stage of their careers, can guide their own research, set an example for others, develop contacts and mentoring relationships, teach their colleagues, and be open to learning from others.
