Illuminare Biotechnologies

Illuminare Biotechnologies is a clinical-stage biotech company dedicated to reducing iatrogenic (doctor-caused) nerve injury, a leading cause of catastrophic surgical outcomes. The company's lead product, Illuminare-1 (rizedisben), is a targeted, small-molecule fluorophore that binds specifically to the myelin on nerves. When administered intravenously and excited by blue light, it enables surgeons to visualize and delineate vital, hard-to-see nerves in real-time during open, minimally invasive and robotic procedures. Illuminare holds an exclusive license to technology originally discovered and optimized by GE Global Research. In partnership with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the company recently completed a Phase 1 first-in-human study in radical prostatectomy patients, which demonstrated both safety and high clinical efficacy—results published in JAMA Surgery in July 2025. With FDA Fast Track Designation and a robust patent portfolio extending through 2044, Illuminare is currently progressing toward Phase 2 studies in nerve-sparing breast reconstruction. From there the company intends to radiate out to other procedures such as hernia repair, spinal fusions, head & neck surgeries, rhytidectomy and other procedures with high incidence of serious nerve injury. The company aims to address this global multi-billion-dollar market by integrating seamlessly into standard surgical workflows to improve long-term patient function and quality of life.
