John Bardeen, emeritus professor of electrical engineering and physics at the University of Illinois, and the first person to win two Nobel Prizes in the same field, died January 30, at the age of 82, of a heart attack at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He had been visiting Boston to consult with specialists about his health problems.
