Lentiviruses are single-stranded RNA viruses and the second major subgroup of the retroviruses. Lentiviruses are powerful tools in molecular biology. They have long incubation periods and are capable of delivering relatively large loads of genetic information into the DNA of a broad range of cells without activating the immune system. Lentiviruses can also transduce both dividing and non-dividing cells, giving them wide application potential.
