With 100 times the number of genes contained in the human genome, and an array of different cell types and functions, one can argue that members of our microbiome constitute an additional human organ system. Research to date has implicated microbial activity in autoimmune disease, cancer, and the obesity epidemic. As a major source of variability across people, understanding and altering an individual’s microbiome is both a challenge and novel avenue for personalized medicine and nutrition.
