One billion years ago, before humankind roamed the earth, life flourished and had evolved rapidly into multifarious communities of organisms. Then suddenly (in geological time) an organism came to life that began belching out disgusting pollution that eventually led to the extinction of 99 percent of all the world's creatures! That organism was a plant, and the toxin was oxygen.

The moral of the story was that what might seem bad in the short term can actually turn out to be beneficial in the grand scheme of life. Plants produced noxious pollutants--the result was man. Man...
