The discovery of green fluorescent protein from luminescent jellyfish and its subsequent development into a bright and stable fluorophore revolutionized researchers’ ability to tag and quantify proteins of interest. Since then, scientists have engineered myriad fluorophores with different excitation and emission spectra that permit simultaneous analysis of many parameters in cell populations or individual cells. Scientists must ensure that their instruments and fluorophores are compatible when designing multiparametric analyses and performing successful experiments.
