The National Institutes of Health awarded more than 100 new grants for high-risk research or innovative work being done by young investigators, the agency linkurl:announced;http://www.nih.gov/news/health/sep2009/od-24.htm today (September 24). Approximately $350 million was awarded as part of the NIH director's High-Risk Research Awards program. The 115 new grants come in three flavors: 42 Transformative R01 (T-R01) Awards to researchers who make innovative ideas central to their work, 18 Pioneer awards, which give $2.5 million to creative researchers at any stage of their careers, and 55 New Innovator Awards, good for $1.5 million to early-stage investigators who have not yet received R01 grants or similar NIH funding.
