The Foundation for Biomedical Research is America's oldest and largest non-profit organization dedicated to the humane use of animals in medical and scientific research. Since 1981, the foundation has worked to bring scientists and journalists together to encourage ongoing news coverage of this complex issue in contemporary research. The creation of the Michael E. DeBakey Journalism Award represents a new effort to recognize and honor journalistic excellence in this field.
The judging panel for the DeBakey Journalism Award gave weight to entries that demonstrated thorough research, accurate reporting, originality, insight and fairness. The work's contribution to public understanding, respect and appreciation for the responsible treatment of animals in medical and scientific advancement was also considered.
