DeBakey Journalism Award from the Foundation for Biomedical Research for a series of articles on the senses that was published over five issues of The Scientist in 2001.

The first article of the series, "Sensory Perceptions" (September 17, 2001), examined how investigators are using gene therapy and stem cell transplantation to move further toward a cure for blindness. "Hair Cell Regeneration Continues to Elude Scientists" (October 1, 2001), reviewed the ongoing effort to replicate the avian method of hearing regeneration into human hearing regeneration. "Bittersweet Research" (October 15, 2001), explored the research that led to the first identification of the sweet and bitter taste receptors, and is beginning to reveal the complex inner workings of the taste cells.
