Nearly everyone within earshot of a television or radio has become familiar with the molecular biology term "Southern blotting," thanks to the publicity attached to some highly publicized forensic cases such as the O.J. Simpson murder trial. Southern blotting is the technique that may ultimately determine Simpson's fate, by matching--or not matching--his genetic profile obtained through DNA fingerprinting with the DNA pattern derived from blood found at the scene of the murder of his wife, Nicole, and at his Brentwood, Calif., home.
