Mass Spec Turned on its Ear

Applied Biosystems of Foster City, Calif., has released a MALDI-TOF/TOF instrument that, according to the company, offers a 10-fold increase in sensitivity over current models.

Applied Biosystems of Foster City, Calif., has released a MALDI-TOF/TOF instrument that, according to the company, offers a 10-fold increase in sensitivity over current models. The new 4800 MALDI-TOF/TOF Analyzer is designed for biomarker discovery and is compatible with the company's ICAT and iTRAQ reagents, as well as with LC MALDI workflows.

The 4800 builds on the platform of Applied Biosystems' earlier, and popular, 4700 instrument. "They've been able to tweak it to improve it in a way where at the end of the day you can actually see the improvements in the spectra," says Cornell University chemical engineer Kelvin Lee, an early user of the instrument, who adds that he has seen enhanced sensitivity in his own initial experiments with the 4800.
