Top 7 From F1000

1. How cilia talk» Primary (non-motile) cilia use membrane proteins in their role as a coordinator of the cell’s signaling pathways. New findings show how a cilium retains those membrane proteins—a barrier at its base made up of proteins called septins.

Q. Hu et al., Science, 329:436-39, 2010. Evaluated by Y. Barral, ETH; M. Wirschell & W. Sale, Emory; H. Folsch, Northwestern; Y. Yamashita, U Mich; M. Bettencourt-Dias, IGC; S. Feng & W. Guo, U Penn; M. Labouesse, CNRS; J. Axelrod, Stanford. Free F1000 Evaluation

2. To stent or not?» A large randomized trial demonstrates that stenting and surgical clearing of arteries are safe and equally effective ways of treating the narrowing of the carotid arteries, called stenosis.

T.G. Brott et al., N Engl J Med, 363:11-23, 2010. Evaluated by P. Pagel & C. J. Zablocki, VA Med Cen; P. Newfield, California...

3. Diabetes dilemmas» This clinical trial demonstrates that two popular high blood pressure drugs had no effect on progressive kidney damage, but did slow degeneration of the retina—two complications of Type 1 diabetes.

M. Mauer et al., N Engl J Med, 361:40-51, 2009. Evaluated by R. Touyz, Ottawa Hosp Res Inst; C. E. Mogensen, Aarhus Univ Hosp; A. Schieppati & G. Remuzzi, Mario Negri Inst for Pharm Res; E. Imai, Nagoya Univ School of Med; M. Azar & T. Lyons, Harold Hamm Okla Diabetes Ctr; J. Sedor, Case School of Med. Free F1000 Evaluation

4. One path to obesity» The authors report a novel mechanism by which a high-fat diet can alter the expression of a large number of obesity-associated genes, suggesting new approaches to treating obesity and insulin resistance.

J.H. Choi et al., Nature, 466:451-56, 2010. Evaluated by P. Bickel, Univ of Texas; P. Webb, Methodist Hosp Res Inst; M. Andresen, Oregon Health and Science Univ; L. Hamann, Novartis. Free F1000 Evaluation

5. Coat structures» Crystallographic analyses of subunits of the COPI coat—a critical structure for the transport of protein-filled vesicles from the Golgi back to the endoplasmic reticulum—reveal similarities to two other major vesicle coats in the cell, suggesting a common origin for this type of structural protein.

C. Lee and J. Goldberg, Cell, 142:123-32, 2010. Evaluated by A. M. Stanley & T. Rapoport, Harvard Med School & Howard Hughes Med Inst; C. Barlowe, Dartmouth Med School; H. Wu, Weill Med College of Cornell Univ; J. Béthune & F. Wieland, Heidelberg Univ; M. Lowe, Univ of Manchester; D. Stephens, Univ of Bristol. Free F1000 Evaluation

6. Sensing tension» This study demonstrates a molecular mechanism for how adherens junctions—protein complexes that occur at cell-cell junctions in epithelial tissues—sense and respond to mechanical forces in the cell.

S. Yonemura et al., Nat Cell Biol, 12:533-42, 2010. Evaluated by M. Labouesse, CNRS; M. A Schwartz, Univ of Virginia; D. Leckband, Univ of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; R. Zaidel-Bar, National Univ of Singapore. Free F1000 Evaluation

7. Monitoring patients» Monitoring patients after surgery using pulse oximetry, which measures the oxygenation of arterial blood, can improve patient outcomes and lower overall health-care costs by reducing the number of emergency resuscitations and trips to the intensive care unit.

A.H. Taenzer et al., Anesthesiology, 112:282-87, 2010. Evaluated by L. Emory & A. Schubert, Ochsner Health System; M. Nunnally, Univ of Chicago; T. Slaughter, Wake Forest Univ School of Med; Y. Xiao, Baylor Health Care System; M. Ansermino, British Columbia’s Children’s Hosp. Free F1000 Evaluation
