Quest Pharmaceutical Services is in pursuit of excellence. This contract research organization (CRO) - a provider of bioanalytical services for pharmaceutical and biotechnology clients - is global in the truest sense of the word. In addition to three labs in the Greater Philadelphia area, it has a Taiwan testing facility with US-managed services.

"Our workflow is integrated, so pharmaceutical companies can manage their programs conducted in Taiwan directly with our project management staff here on the east coast without time-zone or language barriers," says Benjamin Chien, president and CEO of Quest Pharmaceutical Services (QPS). "Having project management located in the US also ensures that all work is compliant with US standards."

Chien founded QPS in Newark, Del., in 1995 after working for DuPont (also located in Delaware). QPS began operating in 1996 with three employees, and today has 190 employees globally and is a privately held firm. Sales have grown by more than 20% per year for the past five years. "We're a relatively small company, but we're very dynamic and vigorous in our growth," says T. Ben Hsu, QPS chief financial officer.

QPS is focused on five business areas: bioanalytical; absorption/distribution metabolism/excretion; biomarker/immunoassay testing; quantitative whole-body autoradiology; and molecular biology. Recently, QPS acquired Bio-Kinetic Clinical Applications, an early clinical research organization. Hsu says the company is "always looking into new business areas for our service portfolio."

Hsu says the company's success is based on quality and customer focus, an emphasis on technical capability and expertise; expanding businesses and new services with vigorous business development, sales, and marketing; and striving for excellent business performance.

The company's geographic location is also an advantage. QPS is "strategically located in the pharmaceutical belt of the east coast, with nearly every Big Pharma company and many biotech companies nearby," says Hsu. "There's a great talent pool in this area as well, from various universities and hospitals, on top of those companies that are here."

In 2005 QPS was recognized as one of the fastest-growing companies in the Greater Philadelphia area in a study sponsored by The Philadelphia Business Journal. According to Hsu this growth benefits not only QPS' customers, but also the residents of the Greater Philadelphia region. "With our continuing growth, QPS provides employment and career opportunities for many talented and skilled people in the area."
